Road crash and injury surveillance in Brazzaville. The system combines city-wide multi-source surveillance, reinforced data collection in two arrondissements and continuous hospital data collection at Brazzaville University Hospital and Talangaï Hospital. Co-led with Prof. Kevin P. B. Bouhelo-Pam (Brazzaville University Hospital).
Integrated crash and injury surveillance, run since December 2024 in Saint-Louis, Thiès and Kaolack at the same time, on the model of the SERIOUS project in Bouaké. It also analyses crash causes, including road-user behaviour. Gendarmerie brigades in the Thiès, Kaolack and Saint-Louis départements collect crash data. Emergency departments at the Thiès and Saint-Louis regional hospitals record injured patients' admissions. Both streams use KoBoToolbox.
The project studies the three main components of the road safety system: how public policy is implemented, risk-taking and risk perception, and road crashes in all their complexity, together with the way they interact. It is led by Université Gustave Eiffel (LMA and LBA laboratories), Aix-Marseille University (Mesopolhis) and IRD, coordinated by Laurent Carnis with Michel Behr and Emmanuel Bonnet, who leads the socio-spatial analysis of road crashes and their health consequences (BAAC 2018-2025). Stakeholder interviews took place in February–March 2026; a questionnaire survey of high-school students in two towns is in preparation. Powered two-wheelers and young people are at the core of the project.

SERIOUS is a prototype urban crash surveillance system, developed with OSER and academic partners and intended to be scaled up nationally. The action research involves the police, the gendarmerie, ONPC, the Bouaké military fire brigade and Bouaké University Hospital. Partners record crashes and injured people daily in Bouaké and on northern roads. Additional surveys cover helmet use, travel speeds and road-user behaviour. A workshop presenting the results of phase 1 was held in November 2024.
Port du casque à Ouagadougou
2024 · Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Helmet-use count by the Burkina Faso team. Despite a legal requirement, 10.7% of powered two-wheeler users wear a helmet. The share is rising among women: 15.04% in 2024 against 5.57% in 2021. The range of helmets on offer is widening as many shops open.
Éducation routière à Bobo-Dioulasso
2023 · Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
Éducation routière et rôle des parents
Children travel alone from the age of 7 and parents play a key role in teaching them safety rules. 63.9% of pupils walk to school, and only 4.8% are accompanied by an adult. Parents place autonomy at age 12, while recognising the high crash risk for unaccompanied children.
Projet Asphaltage, phase 1
Abomey-Calavi and Cotonou, Benin
Assessment by the Benin team of how road paving affected road-user behaviour, crashes and residents’ daily life. Risky behaviour such as speeding or ignoring pedestrian crossings remains common. Residents report more traffic and more crashes, and some report harm to their homes, such as flooding. Effects on economic activity are mixed.
First structure of the network: research teams, NGOs and consultancies from Burkina Faso, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Canada and France.
